Local conditions
New Orleans roofs by the numbers
Four figures from public sources that shape roof work here.

60 inches of rain a year, or more
The National Weather Service’s 1991 to 2020 normals are 60.12 inches at New Orleans Lakefront Airport and 63.35 at New Orleans International Airport in Kenner, west of the city, where June is the wettest month at 7.62 inches.

47,719 regulated buildings
The Historic District Landmarks Commission’s count, on 2017 totals, of buildings in the City’s local historic districts outside the French Quarter. In its full control districts, roof work that can be seen from the street needs approval before it starts.
$7,500
The project value at which Louisiana law requires a residential roofing contractor to hold the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification. The rule has applied since January 1, 2026.
Roofs
The roofs New Orleans has

New Orleans roofs are varied. The City’s Historic District Landmarks Commission (HDLC) records that after the fires of 1788 and 1794, wood shingles gave way to terra cotta tile and then to slate, with metal, asbestos-cement and asphalt shingles arriving around the turn of the 20th century. Its guidelines give slate a life of 60 to 125 years, tile over 100 years and asphalt shingles 15 to 25.
That mix is why the choice of roofer matters. The same guidelines warn that not all roofers are experienced in all materials. Our roofers page sets out which roofers suit slate, tile, shingle, metal and flat roofs, and how shotguns, camelbacks and Creole cottages differ overhead.

Rules
Licenses, permits and historic districts
Three sets of rules meet on a New Orleans roof.
- The state license. Louisiana law requires the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification from the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors for residential roof work valued at $7,500 or more. The rule has applied since January 1, 2026.
- The City permit. A re-roofing permit is required when 50 percent or more of the roof on a one or two-family home is replaced. The base fee is $60.
- Historic review. In the French Quarter a Vieux Carre Commission permit comes before any exterior work. In the HDLC’s full control districts, which include Bywater, Faubourg Marigny, Holy Cross and Algiers Point, exterior work that can be seen from a public right-of-way needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. In Uptown, Mid-City and Parkview the HDLC’s jurisdiction is limited to demolition.
The roofing contractor page explains each one and shows how to look a contractor up on the state’s Contractor Search.
Storms
Storm damage, repairs and stronger roofs
Hurricane Ida came ashore near Port Fourchon on August 29, 2021 as a Category 4 storm. The National Weather Service’s post-storm report lists a peak gust of 75 knots, about 86 mph, at New Orleans Lakefront Airport, in a record it marks as incomplete. After a storm, the Louisiana Department of Insurance’s advice is to photograph the damage before cleanup, make temporary repairs such as tarping, keep the receipts and wait for the adjuster before permanent work begins. The roof repair page goes through leaks, storm damage and repairs by roof type.
A full re-roof is the chance to build stronger. The Department runs the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program, which in its words grants up to $10,000 for homeowners to upgrade their roofs to the FORTIFIED Roof standard. Its Regulation 136 also requires insurers to discount the hurricane portion of the premium on homes with a FORTIFIED designation, with January 1, 2027 set as the latest date for the discounts to be in place. The roof replacement page covers the standard, the grant and the City permit.
Storm damage or a roof at the end of its life: call, and we will connect you with a local roofing contractor.
Before you hire
Comparing roofing companies
We connect you with an independent contractor, and the hiring decision stays with you. The state’s advice after a storm is consistent: be wary of anyone you did not contact who offers to work on your home, get several itemized bids, insist on a written contract and avoid large upfront payments. Louisiana law also bars a contractor from paying or waiving your insurance deductible without your insurer’s consent.
The roofing company page lists what an estimate should contain and how to compare bids line by line. The about page explains how this service works.
Questions
New Orleans roofing questions, answered plainly
Is Roofer New Orleans a roofing contractor?
No. Roofer New Orleans is a referral service, not a roofing contractor. It does not repair, install or inspect roofs, and it holds no contractor license. We connect you with an independent roofing contractor who works in New Orleans. Any visit to the roof, estimate, contract, warranty and payment is between you and that contractor, so check their license with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors before you sign.
What happens when I call, and does it cost anything?
The call is free and there is no obligation to hire anyone. Tell us the address, the kind of roof if you know it, and what you are seeing, such as a ceiling stain, missing slates or shingles lifted by wind. We connect you with an independent local roofing contractor, who decides how to follow up and prices any work.
Which parts of New Orleans can I call about?
Any of them. You can call about a roof in the French Quarter, Treme or the Marigny, in the Garden District, the Irish Channel, Uptown or Carrollton, in Mid-City, Lakeview or Gentilly, in New Orleans East or the Lower Ninth Ward, or across the river in Algiers. Say which neighborhood, because the historic district rules differ.
How do I check a roofer’s license in Louisiana?
Ask for the business name and license number, then use the Contractor Search of the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors at lslbc.gov. Louisiana law requires the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification for residential roof work valued at $7,500 or more. The roofing contractor page walks through the search.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in New Orleans?
Yes, when 50 percent or more of the roof on a single or two-family home is replaced. The City’s residential re-roofing permit is applied for in the One Stop App, has a $60 base fee plus $30 in historic districts, and is closed out with sixteen geotagged photos of the work. The roof replacement page lists the steps.
Does roof work in a historic district need approval?
In many of them. The French Quarter is under the Vieux Carre Commission, which requires a permit before any exterior work. In the full control districts of the Historic District Landmarks Commission, exterior work visible from a public right-of-way needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. In Uptown, Mid-City and Parkview the Commission’s jurisdiction is limited to demolition. The roofing contractor page lists every district.
What is the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program?
It is a grant program run by the Louisiana Department of Insurance. The Department says it grants up to $10,000 for homeowners to upgrade their roofs to the FORTIFIED Roof standard of the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. Grants are given out by lottery in rounds, the Department lists Orleans among the eligible parishes, and work must not start before the program approves the project. The roof replacement page has the details.
What should I do first after storm damage to my roof?
The Louisiana Department of Insurance says to take photos or video before cleanup, make temporary repairs such as tarping holes in the roof, keep the receipts, and contact your insurer as soon as possible. Do not begin permanent repairs until your adjuster tells you to. The roof repair page has the full list.
How much does roof work cost in New Orleans?
Only a contractor who has seen the roof can price it, and Roofer New Orleans sets no prices. As a guide, HomeAdvisor’s cost guides, updated in June 2026, give a typical roof repair range of $395 to $1,968 and say most homeowners spend $5,903 to $13,377 on a roof replacement. These are HomeAdvisor’s general published figures, not New Orleans prices and not quotes.
